Introduction
Over
the past decade, economists and academics have debated
on ‘competitiveness’. Some define it as productivity improvement
while others define it in terms of short-term gains as
a result of the depreciation of local currency, not the
increasing in productivity. Many definitions have been
introduced to describe ‘competitiveness’. Thus, ‘competitiveness’
and other metaphorical terms have been used interchangeably,
creating confusion. However, its exact meaning is still
debatable. To create the fundamental understanding on
the competitiveness, it is pivotal to get some ideas about
competitiveness definitions given by the world assessing
organizations and academic institutions. The Competitiveness
Definitions draws such definitions from various
sources.
In addition to the Definition, a brief details on the
current Thailand’s competitiveness position
assessed by the International Institute for Management
Development (IMD) and the World Economic Forum (WEF) is
also provided in Thailand’s Competitiveness Position,
to highlight the improvement or deterioration of Thailand’s
relative competitiveness position in the global arena.
